Betty Grable canta y actua en esta pelicula de la epoca de 1874, como Cynthia Pilgirm. Ella es una estudiante graduada en mecanografia de la escuela de Packard de Negocios de Nueva York. Se muda a Boston donde ella consigue un empleo de mecanografaen la oficina de Gene Lockhart siendo propietaria la Familia Pritchard, John Pritchard (Dick Haymes) y Alice Pritchard (Anne Revere). Una vez en su puesto Cynthia se enamora de John pero la tia Alice consigue involucrarse y por supuesto, ellos se comprometen en matrimionio. John quiere que Cynthia deje el trabajo y se quede en casa. Pero se crean los conflictos porque Cynthia cree ferventemente en los derechos de la Mujer.
