The mountain is located about 170 miles (270 km) west of the Indian Ocean and 220 miles (350 km) south of the equator. The Great Rift Valley is located about 100 miles (160 km) west. The forces that created this valley has an important role in the creation of Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro began training more than 750,000 years ago. Mountain-building process does not happen overnight. It took more than 250,000 years to Kilimanjaro was formed. Lava flows from the volcano Kibo third stick together, making the mountain at this time. Over time the shape of the mountain clearly. Over the last few ice ages, large sheets of ice called glaciers carved stone, carved into the mountain valleys smooth and sharp.
Kilimanjaro is home to many animals, including 140 species of mammals. Each area has unique characteristics of vegetation that support a different creature. While some areas have a variety of flora and fauna, others are inhabited only by small life forms. In the lush rainforests of the second zone, the trees are alive with monkeys and birds. Large animals, including elephants, lions, leopards and giraffes, travel through the growth of the forest. African hunting dogs and birds of prey like hawks, eagles, and the bearded vulture, who also lives here. Extreme height makes a lot of higher animals. Lions, wild dogs and antelope have been found alive in the third zone. Even fewer live animals in the quarter. This includes birds, rodents and insects. Animals cannot survive the harsh climate of the area fifth.
When John Rebmann first glimpse of Kilimanjaro, the locals said that the summit covered with a strange white powder that looked like silver. They believed that evil spirits are protected mountain treasure, and will anyone trying to climb the mountain to punish. Chagga people still have great respect for the mountains. Traditionally, the Chagga bury the dead, so the body was in front of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Every year thousands of people trying to walk to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The increase can be achieved with standard tours. However, the ascent of Kilimanjaro still considered a major challenge. The attempt to climb the mountain too fast is dangerous. This is because the decrease in oxygen with increasing altitude. Hikers should allow their bodies to adjust oxygen slowly. Besides the lack of oxygen, climbers must include more than 50 miles (80 km) of land without the use of a vehicle.
